The spirit of ancient competition and global discovery came alive as sixth grade students executed on a Greek Olympics ceremony.

In the days leading up to the event, students collaborated in teams to research and construct famous monuments representing their assigned countries. Team Greece carefully recreated the Parthenon, Team Egypt built the majestic Great Pyramids of Giza, Team Italy designed the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Team China constructed the historic Temple of Heaven.

Through research, design, and construction, students demonstrated teamwork, creativity, and a deepening understanding of world history and architecture.

Day One: Wheel of Fortune

The Greek Olympics officially kicked off with a spirited game of Wheel of Fortune. Students took turns guessing letters to uncover key phrases connected to history, social studies, science, and current events. The activity encouraged content review, critical thinking, and collaboration in a fun, competitive format. At the conclusion of the game, first-, second-, and third-place medals were awarded to celebrate students’ efforts and successes.

Day Two: Jeopardy

Day Two brought energy and excitement as students competed in a lively Jeopardy-style competition. Working in teams of three, students selected categories and point values while answering questions across all subject areas, including math, science, social studies, ELA, FACS, Spanish, art, library, physical education, and music.

The friendly competition highlighted the wide range of skills developed throughout the school year and encouraged quick thinking, confidence, and strong teamwork.

Day Three: Minute to Win It Challenges

On the third day, students participated in a series of “Minute to Win It”–style games. These timed challenges required focus, coordination, and strategic thinking. Activities included separating M&M’s by color, balancing dice on a popsicle stick, assembling a cereal box puzzle, keeping balloons from touching the floor, and competing in a race.

The games promoted both fine and gross motor skills while fostering perseverance and collaboration.

Final Ceremony and Athletic Events

On the final day of the Greek Olympics, students proudly presented their completed projects, including country builds, posters, shields, menus, and artwork. Each team formally introduced its nation, showcasing research, creativity, and artistic expression.

Following the presentations, students moved to the gym for the final athletic competitions, which included short dash, long dash, javelin, shot put, relay races, marathon, and chariot races. Throughout the events, students demonstrated sportsmanship and enthusiasm, cheering one another on and celebrating each other’s achievements.

Led by the sixth grade team — Mrs. Nilsen, Ms. Braun, Mrs. Hayes, and Ms. Matises — the Greek Olympics served as a joyful culmination of learning. The week blended academics, creativity, physical activity, and community, leaving students with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for history, culture, and teamwork.
